The Poinsettia is a striking plant with rich red and green leaves. The red leaves are often mistaken as the flower but it's actually the little yellow bulbs in the center that are the flowers. Native to Mexico and Guatemala, they were originally brought to America by a man named Joel Roberts Poinsettia in the 1820s. It is believed that the Poinsettia is poisonous to children and pets but that has been proven untrue. 16th century Mexico is when the plant first became associated with the Christmas holiday and is now part of celebrations the world over.
